Heidi Mies

Heidi Mies, STEM Lab TeacherMrs. Mies, a life long learner and educator, has an extensive education. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, a Masters of Education in Elementary Education (Reading Specialist), from University of Tennessee Chattanooga, and a Masters of Science in Ecological Teaching and Learning from Lesley University. She continues to attend summer workshops focusing on science, engineering, and environmental education.

Mrs. Mies began her love of teaching as a Montessori pre-school teacher, teaching for three years in Tuscaloosa, and two years on Signal Mountain. She also loved her work as a Children’s Librarian at the Chattanooga Public Library.

Mrs. Mies began her teaching career in Hamilton County at 21st Century Academy in 1998. She moved to Thrasher Elementary in 2001. At Thrasher, Mrs. Mies has taught 3rd and 4th grades, Exceptional Ed./Gifted, acted as a Hamilton County Math and Science Instructional Coach, and since 2012 has been the STEM Lab Educator. Mrs. Mies believes being a STEM Educator is a rewarding opportunity. Working with students K-5, she provides students experiences in which they use their sense of wonder and curiosity to become collaborators, critical thinkers, communicators and problem solvers. Mrs. Mies leads the Thrasher Elementary Design Team, the Robotics Team, and coaches Science Olympiads.

Mrs. Mies also continues her work with educators. She frequently plans and facilitates professional development for Hamilton County teachers and Thrasher teachers focusing on science, Project Based Learning, and Engineering is Elementary.

Mrs. Mies loves spending time exploring the world with her family. She especially enjoys nurturing wonder and curiosity with her grandchildren. When not traveling or hiking, she loves to read and enjoys talking with her students about books. Mrs. Mies also loves nature journaling, photography, and is always on the lookout for something new to learn!
